Monday 4th May - Ballarat

Monday 4th May

On monday morning we went to Sovereign hill. At Sovereign hill we went Bowling , Gold mineing and lots of other things. My favourite part of the day is when I found my first piece of gold. It was tiny.

Mum's note:
We had a big day today. We went on a gold mine tour (and learned about "talking timbers" that warn if the roof might collapse), watched a gold pour, had a horse carriage ride and went panning for gold. Isabel learned that mercury is a "silly metal that is liquid at room temperature and when you heat it, it becomes a poisonous gas". We learned that gold is now mined mostly for use in electronic devices (eg computers and phones). We learned how to play 9 pin bowling as it was played in the gold rush era. We also went to the "Blood on the Southern Cross" show about the Eureka Stockade. It was a bit scary. Isabel did not like it when a good man died or when a burning cart came towards us. However, the lights and special effects were amazing.

$145,000 of molten gold being poured.
The poured gold cooled and locked away.
