Tuesday 5th May - Ballarat

Tuesday 5th May

On Tuesday we went back to Sovereign hill to go to the Gold Museum. At Sovereign hill I learnt that candle wax is made out of oil, like car petrol. Also old candles were made out of animal fat. I saw lots of gold and money in the Gold Museum.

This lady is a candle maker and she has a dipping machine and she calls it the Nodding Donkey.
This is a man and he is a sweet maker. He makes the most delicious lollies ever.

Mum's note:
We also saw a wheel wright making wooden wagon wheels with steel tyres. We learnt that the spokes are narrowed at one end to absorb shock. This is apparently the same principle used in hammer handles, where the handle is narrowed near the head to reduce jarring to the hand. Very interesting.
